Dredging Project Ongoing at Port

A few days ago a source reached out, hoping to inform the public of a dredging project that is ongoing at the Port of Peninsula in Nachotta.

“I’ve been working next to the port for 10 years and it's the first time I've seen them do it,” Celeste Bryant said. “It's something people might want to come see, and there are people fishing off the rocks by the dock catching salmon, which doesn't happen - ever -but it's happening right now.”

Port of Peninsula Commissioners Chuck Mikkola also provided some info on the dredging.

“The dredging is an U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contract using bucket excavation with material being deposited in a high-flow lane in the lower bay,” Mikkola said. “The project in [the Port of Peninsula] is only west of the main float, nothing to the south towards the buildings.

“The port would have liked to see more dredging but without permits or funding, we are lucky to get what is being done. The same contract covered Tokeland, and Bay Center dredging,” Mikkola added.
