UPDATED - OCT. 9, 2026 at 6:17 p.m.
Sirens wailed through Raymond and South Bend around 4:05 p.m. on Oct. 9, after a panic alarm was set off at the Pacific County Superior Court.
Officers from all available agencies rushed to the courthouse.
A law enforcement official has informed Veritas Coastal that there was a ‘momentary’ issue with an inmate, and that the inmate was quickly subdued and taken into custody.
According to a family member of Pacific County Jail Director James (Jim) Byrd, he was reportedly attacked by an inmate, and added that he is okay.
Safety and security have been a significant concern at the courthouse, and continue to be a major talking point amongst top county officials.
In recent years, the county hired private security to heighten safety and security but limitations continue to present significant issues.
